You can start at my place. They are ridiculous.

The blackbirds said first frost would be on 11/14/2015. We did have a light frost on 10/19, but it's been relatively mild here since then....with no frosts. Well here it is - the night of 11/14 - and we have our first hard frost. In fact it came close to freezing!

The old timers watched nature and knew things about the interaction between weather and the animal kingdom that we moderns have completely missed. This I believe to be true.

I've seen small groups of blackbirds on the ground in my neighborhood the past few mornings, but no large groups yet. However I believe they may speak to us in the next few weeks with a prediction. Are we listening?

What does it mean when the large blackbirds start fighting hawks over corn?

I saw two pretty good sized flocks in Piedmont 2 weeks ago.

I've been seeing a big flock of grackles (I think) come off the roost the past several mornings. Has not been real bright at 7:15 and my eyes need to be on traffic so I haven't been able to definitively ID. West bound I-20 between Broad River Road and I-26. They are using a stand of bamboo.

Well if we repeat the last two years, you'll have all you can stand.

They keep pushing it further and further out in the forecast. No rain forecasted right now until around October 9th but who knows if that will hold true...

We had a hard frost at the farm this morning - November 15th. One day off from the blackbirds' prediction. Pretty doggone good ole timer's lore, I'd say!
