Default First frost in the Pee Dee

I had a little chat with nature's forecasters today. It seems that first frost in the Pee Dee will occur during the weekend of November 7th - 9th this year.

Mark your calendars. Plan to get your tender vegetation inside or covered before then.

The blackbirds told me to tell you.

Frost on the rooftops all over the Pee Dee this morning, but I haven't seen any on the ground. Tonight may be different with even lower temps.

The blackbirds are usually pretty good prognosticators on first frost.

There were a couple of mornings with frost in October, granted not a heavy one.

Heavy frost all around this morning. The blackbirds were off by four days this year (original prediction was 11/7/14). But I think that's pretty good for Old Timer's weather lore.

Any of you fellers good with woolly bear caterpillars predicting how harsh the winter will be?

My father always said that, in the fall, you should make a note of the first day you observe a large group of blackbirds. Add six weeks to this date, and you get the date of first frost in your area.

I think I've chronicled this in various posts here over the last few years....and it's remarkably accurate.

BTW - "No, no, no, no, I don't smoke it no more...." (Actually never did!)

I will vouch that it seems pretty accurate because I saw a fairly large flock working a sunflower field mid-September. We had a light frost somewhere right near the end of October, which is a week or two late for us.

I got another way of knowing....an old timer told me once.

About mid-september, you add six weeks and come up with a number around the first week of november and that will tell you when the frost is.

Or you could do the same every labor day, but you have to add EIGHT weeks.

That won't be accurate in Georgetown, Beaufort or Caesar's Head. But on the average it's pretty good for the Pee Dee.

Well....here it is almost the end of September, and it's time to talk to the blackbirds. But they haven't shown up yet. Does that mean first frost will be later than usual this year? Stay tuned. The blackbirds will speak to us when the time is right.

I saw a bunch today in Greenville. Don't worry. Cottontop says there is still enough time to grow sorghum.

I've seen good size flocks of blackbirds in the PeeDee for that last 10 days. Not the never ending line of birds kind of group, but enough that I would classify it as 'big'.
