    Default Cast Iron Skillet Chipped?

Early on in college my grandmother bestowed upon me her 8 inch and 12 inch cast iron skillets. Been using both for the past 4 years and sometime this year my really bright roommate decided to put them in the dishwasher.. . . .

Well its been a few months since then and I have gotten the pans seasoned again but I noticed a chip on the back of my 12 inch and I am wondering if there's something I should do so the chip doesn't cause a domino effect and keep it up.

    Any suggestions are appreciated.

I believe what you believe is a chip in the pan is simply a chip out of the grease/seasoning build up on the bottom of the pan. Looks completely normal to me.

Leave it alone. Definitely is seasoning. You would have to strip all the seasoning off of that to attempt to 'repair' it anyway.

Thanks for the responses. I'm just going to leave it be and throw a steak on it right now.

Don't weld that pan! You could screw it up if you do. Most people are not equipped to weld cast iron.

That is a chip in the seasoning, not the iron. Heat to 350 in the oven and dab it with some bacon grease or better lard. That will start the process of reseasoning that spot. To completely strip the pan, put it in a self cleaning oven upside down, and run a cleaning cycle or two. Then reseason whole pan. Not advised unless some woman screws up your pan. My wife cooked onions and tomatoes in mine and let it sit. because I cleaned the cast iron. Needles to say 60 years plus seasoning was ruined, and she, to this day, does not touch my cast iron. I bought her some enameled cast for her use. My grand would have been pissed too.

Why not burn it out really good in a hotter than hot fire and let it slowly cool. Absolutely do not attempt to cool with water and then reason the pan. This is the proper way since that is only a chip of seasoning gone, and fair warning it will continue to do so until the seasoning is removed and rebuilt from the pan.

Are welders arguing about as entertaining as truck drivers arguing?

    Only 2 things I can't weld.
A broken heart and the crack of dawn.
