I didn't realize they were in Laurens.

We have several food related companies that call SC home. There's a canning company in Ninety-Six that makes the Cambridge and Star Fort brand hash. It was owned by a Mr. Craig, and old pro football Hall of Famer who lived on a farm out there. He sold it to a couple of guys before he died.

The Dukes mayo company is originally out of the Belton/Honea Path area. Or at least the family owns a very big farm there. They have some of the best dove shoots in the state each year. Getting an invite ain't easy. I had a friend that got to shoot there a couple of openers and he said it was unbelievable both times he shot. They serve a light lunch and during the shoot a man brings cold drinks around to the shooters in the field. After the shoot they have a big bbq. At least that's the way is was for many years. I don't know anyone who shoots there now so I don't know how they do the event.

Carolina Pride, mostly pork products are based in Greenwood and owned by the Barnet(sp?) family.

Blazer's Shrimp Dip was started by a friend of mines dad, Mr. Britt, at his restaurant on the lake called Blazers. He passed away a couple of years ago and now it belongs to his son, Bob. I've seen it in grocery stores all over SC and GA. I don't know exactly what the availability area is for it, I never thought to ask Bob how many states it was in.

I'm sure there are more that I don't know about.

Childress was a small mom and pop operation coming into Watts Mill area out on 49 if I remember correctly. Grandpa would carry us out there every time we came to Laurens to buy some from them. Good stuff.

My grandad is the oldest Childress brother. The store is still there and a popular place to solve the worlds problems. They still have a meat counter but the plant has been shut down for a while, but the sausage is still good.

Well where were you on that one?

HA. Those old boys sitting around in there were not too worried about me walking in without a mask, that is for sure...

Lived in southern Spartanburg county and been in that area my whole life and that’s 1 store I’ve been by 10,000 times and never stopped there. Now I’m gonna have to go see what the fuss is about.
