    Default Never Been

Never been bow fishing before, does anybody do guides? A buddy of mine said he knew somebody that said they went at Santee and were killing huge cats, but this was years ago.

It's really easy. Lights on the boat cruising shallows at night or polarized glasses on virtually any body of water during the daytime.

I went a few minutes down the road to see if they were up in the river today. There was far and carp present but not nearly as many as will be in a week or two. If I had a boat currently I would set it up with lights and do the night thing.

Between sundown and midnight is the most productive time for me. I started my first year only bowfishing in the daytime and still would see decent numbers. The one I'm holding is the bottom gar in the bottom pic.

People bury them, put them in garden fields, garbage, slice in 1/3 and feed turtles. Of course a few rednecks dump them at the ramp. Most importantly, they kill a handful of total population.

I use tin snips to open the scales and filleted the meat out. It can be chewy at times. Gar mainly makes good fertilizer .

If you decide to dump them, please don't do it at the ramp. It will get tree huggers upset like the Rant shooting.

Gar are good for filling holes, no predators, I don't even think gators will eat em. Thank a bowfisherman for helping to keep the population in check. That being said, I really don't shoot em unless it's a numbers tourney cause I can't even give em away and I got to drive to dump em.

If you are interested in a guided trip I got a few licensed folks I can recommend to you.

and..Gone South, what did that gar weigh?

We did clean some gar before and passed it on to the guy that gets carp from us, he and his folks didn't care for it. They take carp and don't like gar...I have had the gar balls and they are good but I never tried just nuggets or fillets but its real pretty meat

Yep, right here in SC. I think the record was 28lbs so I was shy by a few lbs.

A fish that size could lose a pound in water weight over night.

The guys that shoot tournaments keep barrels filled with water to keep them from losing water weight.
