I almost always hunt alone. I know some folks think it's kind'a sad but I really enjoy the solitude. The problem is that it's easy to get in a rut without someone to argue with my choice of hunting spots, decoy placement, or criticize my calling. Partly because of Squatty and Bear's quest for the 32 huntable species of North American ducks, I decided just prior to last season to attempt to take all 32 huntable duck species in South Carolina while hunting solo.
I am keenly aware that accomplishing this falls somewhere between impossible and illegal; harlequin ducks are illegal to kill anywhere on the east coast and, to my knowledge, Barrow's goldeneyes have never been recorded from either of the Carolinas.
So, this quest is simply there to help me deal with some of the paradigms of being an aging, cantankerous, obsessive-compulsive.
The quest has done some good. In this season and last, I've hunted bodies of water that I ignored for years. I've changed my decoy spread including making some of my own decoys. I've gone at times I wouldn't normally go and to places I normally wouldn't go to.
Anyway, I really been focusing on trying to find a common goldeneye but part of being a hunter is taking those opportunities that present themselves. Today was just such a day and, as of now, I have killed all three species of scoter hunting solo from my little 1436:
