Default What gun/caliber for hog hunt with dogs

Got an invite to go with guys with dogs this Friday am on a club across the road for my club.

Only hogs I ever shot were while deer hunting (gun & bow)

What type of gun is needed for this, pistol better than rifle ??

Have pretty much any gun there is from AR 15-300 Weatherby Mag and most anything in between

I assume with dogs it will be close shots

Use a good knife. But real badasses use the corkscrew from a Swiss Army knife!

Depends on the type of dogs. Not everyone uses catch dogs. I use a 44 lever action or carbine. A 30-30, 35 rem, 357, any of these calibers are good.

That will work but mot of my experiences from that type of hunting it is the handler shooting the pig. I would definately tote a pistola but with their dogs locked on the pig getting shot they will likely dispatch it themselves, unless they wanna mess with ya that is and they hand ya a knife. Dispatching a "dog hog" is generally pretty close quarters work from what Ive seen.

Killed a pile of em with a Marlin 1894 Lever in 44 Mag. Short rifle, holds a fair number of Bullets..... Open sights are good up close..

Seems to be my go to.. Pistol is OK.. 44 for that as well. Just personal preference.

You might want to ask the guys with the dogs. I personally don't care for people taking rifles on our hunts. Theres alot going on and you never really know where everyone is. Sometimes we will let a couple of people with shotguns stand on edges where hogs may slip out. I had a guy go into a bay last year with a 30-06. Hog was caught with 5 dogs, and he shoots it point blank. He hasn't been back
