I have AppleTV (two of them) and gave one to my parents for Christmas. I thoroughly enjoy it and look towards the day when they realize Steve Jobs dream of true a la cart choices for content. So far this year AppleTV have doubled their free content. That combined with the best way for watching Netflix PLUS to be able to mirror any content from other Apple products is worth way more that the $99 (on sale at Best Buy for $89.) Now with the advent of iTunes Radio, then it makes it a must have in my opinion.

Some people have hacked it and done amazing things but honestly it is worth the money regardless. MG

I got apple tv as well and cut the cord. Got an HD antenna that picks up all the local channels (NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox). The only hurdle I have now is live sports on espn but there are websites that stream live sports. Just gotta mirror it from iphone/ipad etc

My Bill went from 160 to 62 bucks a month (internet + netflix)

AppleTV sucks with local content which is what I believe he's asking about.

I really just want to stream free movies and channels like HBO which you can do w/ the XBMC. Just can't get them to stream instantly, there's a lag.

If you're looking to stream content, you should look at an appliance (AppleTV, Roku, Etc.)

BTW, have you tried watching HBO go from your mobile device and 'casting' it to your Chromecast? HBO Go is compatible on Android and iOS.

Xbox media center. It's an open source program, meaning anything can be uploaded to and watched for free. That being the case, people upload movies, TV shows, and also stream live TV channels.

You can also hack the AppleTV (2nd Gen) and put XBMC on it and they claim they are close to it for 3rd Gen. This explains why 2nd Gens are selling for twice what the 3rd Gens are on eBay. I still think Apple is close to a la carte for ESPN, HBO etc and believe that simulcasting over the air local programmingis already possible so it is up to the lawyers to work out. I believe that is why the TWC, Dish etc had such a hard time re-signing broadcast this year, because they wanted to EXCLUDE streamers. I say just delaying the inevitable. BUY THE AppleTV, YOU WILL NOT BE SORRY! Mg

Agreed. Everything is moving towards live streaming via net.

So wanted to bring this back up since I had some reservations and couldn't get it to work to do what I wanted. Downloaded xbmc, and downloaded/bought an app called "Avia Media Player". I'm able to connect to avia, then XBMC and what movies/tv from my tablet. Viable option for anyone that enjoys movies like I do, but doesn't like paying to rent/buy.
