I've got a couple of the Marlin Model 60's. Love 'em. I just wish they had the box magazines.
The 10-22 is, of course, the tits.
There's another Marlin model that's very similar to the 10-22, but I can't recall the model #. I believe quackaddict's got one...

Haven't been out looking yet but did see a 10/22 advertised. Had a laser built in, don't see that as being to practical for hunting.

795 runs a straight-fed magazine. That's my one complaint with that gun is the magazine protruding like it does.
It'll out-shoot a 10/22 right out of the box. Now when you get to tinkering with the Rugers, there's no comparison.

Not an auto but when I was 13 I bought a Henry lever action and I still love to shoot it. I've never had a problem and can shoot the hair off a flea's ass at 100 yards.

How old is your son. A little bolt action would be a lot safer than a semi. In case they forget to put safety back on. Just my thought if their young. I don't know what they cost but I have a little savage bolt in stainless that I won. It's accurate as hell.

He's almost 13. He has the Cricket and ready to move up. Dang skweerls killing our cob corn , taking it off as fast as I can put it out for the deer. I will keep an eye open for the black Friday deals. Thanks for the recommendations.

The laser is useful for coon hunting, shooting bullfrogs and trimming hard to reach limbs around a tree stand but other than that, it's mostly a gimmick. It will help graphically teach a new shooter that they need a rest to shoot well.
The Ruger 10/22 is the standard rifle and there are more after market parts to soup it up than any other rifle.

More support from the aftermarket realm than any other rimfire rifle on the planet.
Not to mention, they are great reliable, accurate rifles.
