Never seen a goose with a neck collar that did not have a leg band. The different colors are meant to distinguish the flyway, but I can't recall what white was for.

hey bo, those are geese that Delta Waterfowl Midlands chapter and DNR, and I think a few guys from the USFWS, caught in the summer during the molt when they were flightless. They installed the neck collars to help identify the resident geese and monitor how they interact with the migratory birds that show up on the refuge annually and spend the winter here. I think they put on a few more than 100. Good killins!

They put the approximate age on the certificate.

actually what they put on the certificates that I have seen is something to the effect that the bird was hatched before a certain date. The only way they can do this is by determining whether the bird was a juvinile or an adult at the time of the banding.

I don't know that their is an accurate way of aging ducks beyond "juvinile vs. adult" so they don't know how old the bird was when banded. Just that it is more or less than a year old.
If you don't know me how could I offend you?

If you are not a member of Delta or DU then you are living on duck welfare.

I was only going by my phone conversation. I'm sure candor is right, ducks are probably aged like doves; "hatch year" and "after hatch year".

actually ducks can be aged accurately, but then again youd have to drag bogster around everywhere with you.

Don't know how to age waterfowl, but do know how to tip the iceberg on duck hunting wannabes.

    Here's what you do:
Scower ebay until you find the Jack Miner band bidding section.
Buy a couple......place them on a few mallards you shot the day before your post on scducks.
Then try and pawn it off as though you killed them

.....oh, and wear lots of face paint in a beaver pond
