Can anyone help me with grass control in food plots. Planting grain sorghum. Has anyone ever used DUAL or Treflan as preemergent herbicides. If so what are the particulars?

just to be the devil's advocate, why are you planting sorghum?

as for treflan, it can be incorporated into the soil prior to planting. what is the germination on the sorghum? 90 days? or is it 60? Anyway, i think you mix 2 pints/10gal per acre. disc it in.

Planting sorghum and millet are the easiest things for me to plant with the equipment I have. I plant for turkeys primarily and these provide insect cover and seed.

sure. birds love to eat the seeds. whoopee.

    this time of year:
for turkeys, i would plant chufa. for ducks, i would plant corn. for deer, I would plant beans.

Toofer, he didn't axe your opinion on what you would plant, he wanted grass control.

Grain sorghum benefits more than birdies, deeries eat the hell out of it also.

Those Columbia city slickers don't understand the importance of bugging areas when it comes to wildlife management.

got plenty of fallow lands. i just dont understand the importance of planting another grass species. got plenty of that crap.

tell me, lab, oh-wise-one. when does a deer eat milo? does he eat the leaves or wait for it to mature and just eat the head?

answer that and I will enlighten you a bit further...

come now, Lab. I said nothing of the sort. I just was wondering why to plant it. I was getting a reason.

It doesn't matter in this specific case. The treflan will kill it.

Now, when is the milo mature....approximately? Then, after the seed head gets eaten, what happens?

All i am saying is that there are MORE beneficial things to plant than milo no matter the equipment the farmer has. If you want to plant a little bit of everything in different spots on your property, I would include milo. But if i was limited in space and equipment, milo sure as hell wouldnt be my first choice.

Toofer here is where you said it was crap:

i just dont understand the importance of planting another grass species. got plenty of that crap.

There ya go. I would not plant milo as a sole source food. However, blended in with other crops it is a very worthy food source imo.

I think I am going to row plant the sorghum, and then drill in beans and peas over it. Hopefully, the sorghum will give the peas something to climb and the plot will have enough shading to curb weeds. Any thoughts or experience with this?

Sound like a damn good plan, throw in a little lab-lab if you have some extra funds.
