Yeap. J.J. Audubon called the Cardinal the "Cardinal Grosbeak".

And, I bet 98% of the "environmentalists" don't have a clue about a blue grosbeak or indigo bunting...or a painted for that matter...

Very good pictures and insight RH.I was dumb enough to ask some SCNDR conservation officers if they had seen any Swallow-tailed Kites one day[I was doing a survey].Never heard of them was reply]. Oh well. As for the enviormentatal folks-they are too busy with getting thier buttocks bigger in front of the screen.Actually it is very trendy to say you saw one of those birds at the next party!!

Very cool. I've been trying to get some pictures of some Inca doves that have been hanging around my place for months, but I never seem to have the camera when I need it. I put up some feeders, but the damn Mournings, White-wings, and house finches won't let anything else eat at them.

I have one of those feeding at my bird feeder over the weekend.

I used to live on property that bordered Gippy Plantation. I had a constant stream of painted buntings at the feeder all summer. After the first brood, the males take charge of the babies and the female raises the second brood.

Just like the indigos in the picture above, males painteds can't stand the sight of one another.

I've done the same thing with the ground doves around here. They don't pose for pictures.

Those painteds might be my favorite bird (short of the Northern Bobwhite). I also love the way Cedar Waxwings look. I have just gotten in to looking at birds and watching them after some classes on identification and behavior.

Not much of a bird watcher but while deer hunting in October a few years ago I had a flock of about 6 birds that were so beautiful that I had to do some research to see what they were. Turned out they were Cedar Wax Wings. They were eating they red berries on a dogwood tree.
