Went down around Elloree this morning with 2 buddies. Was hoping that one of them would get a bird. Set up a little late, but had 2 hens fly down in the field to the left, and another walked out to the right. A tom flew down in the pines behind us, and I told one of the other guys to turn around because I thought they would come from behind. He got with 2 more birds, and they started gobbling and coming our way. I heard them walking and drumming, and kept waiting to hear him shoot, but he only got a glimpse 1 time. They walked out into the field about 40 yards to my right, and ran toward me and the decoys (spring jealousy). They got to about 5 yards and stopped. I turned and shot the biggest one, as they were getting out of dodge.
16 lbs. 10" beard and 1" spurs. The spurs were very sharp and curved, so I don't think it was a 2 year old. We went to another spot, and called up 5 longbeards and 2 hens, but the guy missed clean at 30 yards with my gun. Can't win 'em all. Pretty good morning though.
