Here are some tips I made for my buddies boat. Going to do an island at my house, but have not done it yet.

Just did some countertops for the daughter of a lady my wife teaches with. 6/4 reclaimed heart pine from the Cone Mill in Greensboro. They made high end denim for over 100 years. This wood was estimated to be over 300 years old at the time of the mill’s inception around 1890. It was the first time I’ve worked with such storied boards.
The client was adamant that she wanted to butt joint the 90deg turn of the long run and after I stopped losing sleep for it, I was mostly over it. My opinion was that it should be mitered or stacked like the boards in Nanny Slayers’s post above. Oh well, they aren’t mine.
All in all, they turned out just fine.

That board would drive me nuts.
It’’s like 2 duck decoys that look different sizes but aren’’t.

What the hey do you know about decoys, simple boy? You dowel or biscuit any of those boards together?
Don't do it, Charlie Horse, don't do it.

You make her sign a waiver of warranty on that butt joint?
Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn't go so far as to call a dog filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a dog's got personality. Personality goes a long way.

She asked what was the downside of doing it that way. I told her it would make anyone that knew what they were looking at question the integrity of the entire job.

Some folks are hard headed. She'll be bitching in a few months, it won't split at the glue joint, the crack will develop right outside of the biscuits more than likely. Did you seal the underside too? That might mitigate movement, might. People don't understand that wood expands and contracts a good bit depending on humidity and temperature. We laid floor for a lady when it was 90 degrees outside and she refused to keep the house acclimated consistently, when it got down to 50-60 degrees and 40% humidity she called and said her floor had cracks in it and I needed to come pull it up and start over. I had to send her the waiver I'd made her sign detailing what would happen because she wouldn't listen to me, of course she badmouthed me even though I offered to fix it at cost and it was only a 50sf area. I had another one that wanted wood countertops in a bathroom, I refused to do it though.

Stained and sealed the same on all 6 sides for that very reason. Didn’t glue it down so it could move. Only attached with minimal screws in cabinet corners.
