You probably have a wireless G router, a wireless N router may solve the issue.

Who is your service through and what speed is your internet.

speedtest.net will tell you the speed you are getting vs. what you are paying for.

Get a wifi extender. Plugs into an outlet and mimics your wireless network. Can cost anywhere from $30 to $150 bucks.

This, or as the doggy doc said, move it downstairs. Only problem I've had is the extender will lose the signal every so often. All you have to do is sync them again. I'm sure you could handle that...

We have one that we instal that you put your wireless security code in and it boosts it really well. Its made by a company called xyzel

I had the same problem you did with my wifi. I used three diffrerent brands of routers. I finally ended up purchasing the apple apirport extreme. It is a great router. It was a little more than the cost of an extender but well worth the money for my situation.

Look at what brand and model your router is. The RF output varies depending on model. You can check the mfr website for the specs. If you have a cable modem you could try getting a longer Ethernet cable and relocating the router closer to the kitchen. I just got through relocating my in-laws so they could get coverage out in the sun room. You can try an extender but I personally would buy a router with the range that you need to reach your kitchen. Most of them have the range listed on the back of the box.

We have our router in the upstairs bonus room. Couldn't get service in the master bath downstairs which is a necessity. We bought one of the linksys range extenders for around 80 bucks and plugged it in to an outlet downstairs. We get a good signal throughout the house now. Very easy to do and beat having to set up a new router.

Do you network your printers? Do you have a back up system via your network? Do you want to play your music on your home stereo? The apple devices work well with each other. If you want to network a usb printer or if you want to plug in an external drive for backups etc. you can and it works well. I had the same problem. I installed an airport base station up stairs. Networked my usb laser printer to it. Downstairs I installed an airport express as a booster and also hooked up my home stereo to the express. Itunes plays through the stereo this way. I will probably upgrade soon to an airport time capsule which is a base station with either a 2gig or 3gig hard-drive for backups or sharing files.
