Default Do I need a jack plate ?

I'm running a 40 Yamaha 4 stroke on a 16ft War Eagle. I have the motor as far up as I can already which puts the cavitation plate about 1" above the bottom of the hull. Running this way with a 13 pitch powertech ss prop turning 5600 rpm's I'm at 34 mph. Should this set up go any faster? Or would a jack plate help?

That's relatively high. I higher pitch prop would probably help with top end.

You don't think a higher pitch prop would lug the motor?

I had a 1542 sea ark w/ the same motor and had 14 pitch and it didn't lug it at all it was a lighter boat though.

cavitation plate should be even with the bottom of the boat.

Put that motor as high as you can while still getting good water pressure. Mine currently sits 2 inches above bottom of hull.

That's as high as I can get it. Still have good water pressure. I'm just wandering if the set back from the jack plate would let me pick up some speed.

Probably a few mph. Get one, it will only help.

5600 rpm is pretty good but you might could get a little more if you picked it up some. Right now my 4 stoke 40 is topping out around 5900-6000 with my 13 pitch powertech.

I have a Vance 4" manual and I love it. Mines set about 1-1.5" higher than drain plug. Paired with a 14p it runs pretty well. 1648 hull. But I'm also 2 stroke.

You might want to go with a breakaway plate if u have tilt n trim. That motor won't kick up and you will get about 6 inches of set back and you can raise the motor a little higher. Then your rpms will come on up. Reprop the boat and haul ass

I went from 33 mph to 37 mph with a break away plate with my 40.

Yeah I don't think the jack plate is neccesary. The breakaway give you the benefit that a manual jack plate would and the benefit to not mess up your lower unit. The setback paired with your tilt n trim gets more boat out of the water and you will see a noticeable gain in mph and handling

It is nice to be able to dial in where your motor gets the most performance though.

The only time that boat and motor will see 40 is when you're pulling it behind your truck.
