This story was just covered by College Football Live on ESPN. The question they asked is where did this kid this information? A coach or player?
[quote=HartClemson99;1436345]I made my first trip to Clemson during my Junior year and had a blast. Always enjoyed Clemson during homecoming and football games but I'll still take Charleston. I think I saw where the Summerall Guards performed at halftime for military appreciation day either last year or the year before.
It all depends on who is coaching. I was at Clemson when Tommy B was hired. All of the sudden athletes were in class and they had to sit in the first three rows to be counted present. Assistant coaches came to almost every class to take attendance of football players. There were some really smart players and some that were not very bright, like Shawn Crawford (He slept most classes but now has a gold medal).
Regardless, it was a dumb thing for a recruit to say.
When I was at USC for baseball we had mandatory study hall for freshman and if you didn't do well after you're freshman year it was mandatory then as well. Everyone had to have a piece of paper filled out by all of their professors that included their current grade, attendance, class involvement, and a few other things once or twice a month. They also sent people "undercover" into classes with pictures of the players in that class and they would mark if you were there or not. If you missed class and didnt have a damn good reason Tanner wasn't happy.
To my knowledge all of this happened with football and every other sport too (don't know how Spurrier handled mess ups).
This whole thing was blown a hair out of proportion..
He was originally quoted as saying "with the student centers and tutors, it would be hard to fail"..

Bottom line is if I want someone smart to come to school, I will give him an academic scholarship. If I want him to play football, he gets a football scholarship. I could care less if he can spell his name, as long as he whoops some ass on the field. All he needs to do is be able to count to 5, cause that's what's next.
Clemmings always rushing to give you their resumes and try to convince everyone of how great Pickens County is. Reeks of desperation and regret for having chosen such a desolate, boring place to have spent 4years...
It's only boring if you scare women.
Ps, if Andre Ellington got into and in fact graduated from Clemson, this entire argument wouldn't hold a drop of rat piss..

All we are worried about is if he can spell,
five
six
seven...
Either write things worth reading, or do things worth writing.
Exactly.
I always think it's hilarious to watch this type of discussion. No offense to either school, but I don't think many people in this state regard either school's undergrad degrees as superior to the other (except some of you alums who are convinced CU is equivalent to Harvard). Get over it. Both school's bachelor degrees are great, but neither is top tier, and it's truly a waste of bandwidth to make a case that ________ University or University of ________ is otherwise. People who are smart and work hard will succeed wherever they go to school.
I know a former GA at Clemson, (during the Bowden years) that said if you could get in, they could keep you qualified. It is like that everywhere. Michael Carvell (AJC) told me he was in classes with players at Georgia and the grades were based off attendance, not tests.
It is laughable that ANYBODY would defend academics for athletes anywhere.
I don't give a damn if the kid can do everything with a football except autograph it. I care about Saturdays, not the classroom.
