How early can you start food plots for next year down here on the coast? I
started one last year but must have been too late and the crop (a mix) didn't
get very big by the time deer season started.

I assume you are talking warm season (summer time) food plots? Earliest would be after any danger of frost. When that is down there, I dk. You have to be careful if you turkey hunt your property, if you hunt over a plot and the seeds haven't germinated yet it could be considered baiting.
Also, if a crop didn't get very big, it could be due to soil moisture, Ph, nutrients or most likely, a combination of all three...
Look for the sticky in the habitat section that DJP posted on food plots for the Craig Harper book , it will answer any question you have about food plots

Super thanks a lot. Yes it is warm season. The weather is really supprisingly warm this year and has got me antsy.

We have had a frost on Easter too about 12-14 years ago. Corn was wrecked.
Yea, I have to remind myself of that often because at times I don't feel that young.
Look forward to the pics. We are starting year two of owning our property and are getting our plots/dove field limed soon. I know it wont really help our warm season plots this year but I am excited for our cold season plots, as long as we get some good rains.
