That’s the problem with it. A Dad will take his kid hunting whenever the kids wants to go. Therefore that child will have more opportunities to kill a deer. A kid that hasn’t grown up in a family that hunts, more times than not is only gonna get to go on special days. Such as youth days. They need to be able to kill whatever they see if they take the notion. Moving it to August eliminates their ability to kill a Doe if that’s all they see.

Is anyone opposed to an early day and a late day?

I am not. I would recommend a youth day the Saturday before the season starts, and the 2 weekends after the season goes out. And no tag requirements for any of the youth days.

By the time youth day runs around we are so burnt out and ready to move on to other things. No way I will take them in August for a youth hunt.

But I am not opposed to having them on either side of the regular season

Not at all, and I’ll agree with Fuzzy. Let the youth days be wide open.

The department may select one or more days to designate as a 'South Carolina Youth Hunting Day'

They were told DNR would continue the late day but I can make sure it is in writing.

I caved on nothing. My proposal would give 3 extra days for the kids. 1 before the season begins, and 2 additional days after the season.

"We" referred to hunters. Hunters prize horns.

Thanks for the thoughtful and respectful dialogue. I agree with you. I will make sure the house version includes before and after season.

We the hunters: yes we want to kill the biggest deer, longest beard, catch the biggest fish.

You the Government: Dictating the way ‘We’ the hunters can take a child hunting a deer that is overpopulated, destroys crops, and being in a state that has the longest season of all states it borders . I believe in taking every child hunting , I much rather see any child kill a state record than myself . I’ve invited a lot of fellow duckers to come hunt, fish, and I say bring a youngin. Why not try a tag free season for kids and let them spend time with Parents in the woods. If every member on this site child killed a deer next year, you would not see the effect.

I just can't wrap my head around why we need a youth day when the season is 4 months long.

The kid not needing a license or tag. Period. It's like a 50% governed hunt. You need your own "permission slip", but the kid doesn't.

Youth days are useless for hunter recruitment. It's a feel good measure that gives kids with hunting parents an extra day in the field. You want to recruit new hunters go after the farm to table foodies.

True but you are able to make a difference if you choose to.

Agreed. I don’t hunt deer. I bird hunt on both public and private lands. I don’t run my dogs on public land when deer season is open. With a youth deer day on a Saturday in January, it could be argued small game hunters lose another day.

But, since there are only 3 or 4 of us left in the state, we barely rate a second thought from the legislature and DNR. Follow the money.
