The guy pointed a gun at him in the parking lot, which created a separate incident in which he feared for his life in my opinion. Maybe he thought the coast was clear and he fled the building, bad guys were still there.
If he is fired, I would hire him, unless it is found that the two parties had a history and this was a drug deal gone bad or something.
