    Default Gun Safe question

I got a gun safe for christmas and want to know if there is anything that I need to do after placing my guns in it. I have seen some gun safe humidifiers. Is this something that I need? I just don't want to screw up any of my guns. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated.

Be careful - back when I owned guns, I'd put them int hesafe and they multiplied. My wife just couldnt' understand it.
Honey...I'll do it after the season is over.

I know a dude in the air force- sends me 2 pound sacks of silicant- I simply drop one in when I think about it-- he gets them out of parts for airplanes that are shipped to him--

How long do those silica packets last? Do they go "bad"?

I swap one out 3-4 times a year- I have no idea how long they last- someone said you can heat them up and they can be used again-- wait-- here is what I just found

Little packets of silica gel are found in all sorts of products because silica gel is a desiccant -- it absorbs and holds water vapor. In leather products and foods like pepperoni, the lack of moisture can limit the growth of mold and reduce spoilage. In electronics it prevents condensation, which might damage the electronics. If a bottle of vitamins contained any moisture vapor and were cooled rapidly, the condensing moisture would ruin the pills. You will find little silica gel packets in anything that would be affected by excess moisture or condensation.
Silica gel is nearly harmless, which is why you find it in food products. Silica, or silicon dioxide (SiO2), is the same material found in quartz. The gel form contains millions of tiny pores that can absorb and hold moisture. Silica gel is essentially porous sand.
Silica gel can absorb about 40 percent of its weight in moisture and can take the relative humidity in a closed container down to about 40 percent. Once saturated, you can drive the moisture off and reuse silica gel by heating it above 300 degrees F (150 C).

Let your guns get to room temperature before you put them in the safe...never just bring in a gun that has been out in the cold into the warm house and put it directly in the safe.. This can cause condensation, and can lead to rust.

Dicks has a dehumidifier with a sensor that lets you know when to recharge. Then you just plug it in to a wall socket over night and put it back in the safe. Around $30!!

Chuck I ended with the Centurion by Liberty. It was on sale at lowes over the holidays for about 300 bucks marked down from 500. The GF picked it up for me as I would rather spend that $$ on another gun to prop up in the closet. It seems to be a decent safe...has a fire rating of 20 mins. Dry weight is 265 but full of guns it would definitely take two to move it and its pre-drilled so it can be bolted to the ground. Its suppose to hold 14 long guns but I can only get 9-1
    0 guns in comfortably.

Thanks, dmatheny i will check that out!
