So I got to tearing into two lowers today that were obviously used in salt. My intent was to do a good check and replace the impeller, gaskets, etc and anything else that needed attention. Found some serious gunk and salt buildup.
A word to the wise, wash plenty of fresh water through following every trip out in the salt, and do regular maintenance.
From lower unit #1: This is the housing that seals the bearing at the top of the main shaft. The water punk impeller housing sits on top of this piece. Water travels thru it after being sucked into the grates on its way to the impeller then shoots up to the motor. Followed by pics of the seals that were removed from said plate, which keep the foot grease in the foot and the water in its place. With all the corrosion I had to break the plate to get it out, hence the partial piece.
From lower unit #2: Not as bad as #1, but still not good. Last 2 are before seal removal and after.
