Can you ship a gun to yourself in another state? Say my wife wants to go to New Orleans and I obviously cannot carry on the plane and would rather not have a handgun in an airport at all (locked up or otherwise)....what do you do?

I think it can go on a plane if you declare it and check the luggage (guidelines about locking mechanisms too), not carry-on.
Declare it??? Hell, it's a misdemeanor if you dont. You will have to declare at check in. Fill out the TSA "Orange Tag" , show empty, have all ammo in original packaging. Magazines unloaded and separated from ammo. ( if a Semi Auto)..
Handgun in locked cased- packed into checked bag. Enjoy.
Expect to get harassed, thrown to the pavement and possibly arrested if a NOLA PD officer notices you are armed. They take it pretty seriously...
9 people shot just last night by two Evolutional U Turns on Bourbon Street.. have fun!!!
PM me if you want some restaurant recommendations. We go to NOLA often.. just be out of the Quarter by 9 PM... after that the roving bands of scumbags start roaming about.

This may be wrong or right, take it for what it's worth.... I called delta and asked the same question. I was told all the above bullshit, then told if the pilot of the flight didn't want firearms on his plane at any given time, then the gun would have to stay behind. I would then have to find a way to ship it by someone with a federal license. So in short, she meant I was taking a risk even trying to carry it. Sounded like to much of a pain in the ass
Just check it. I fly with checked guns not a big deal.
Back to the NOLA shooting..
The two idiots that start a shootout fire at each other and don't make contact, but strike 9 innocent bystanders... typical..

There is BIG business in stealing firearms (especially handguns in luggage) out of checked bags. Airport police dont care and arent much help.
Lets say you fly out of charlotte, connect in atlanta and arrive in New Orleans. When you arrive you find your fire arm missing. You report it to New Orleans airport.
Where was it stolen? CLT, ATL or MSY? nobody knows, and by the time you research, its too late.
I have flown with long guns with no problem, i would be hesitant to fly with hand guns however.
I researched shipping to a local gun store, then shipping back before return, but waited til too close to trip.

I'm not suggesting that you just put it unsecured in a bag. I check them in a Pelican style case when I fly with handguns. They have no idea if it is a firearms or a camera that way. If you really want to keep them out put a biohazard sticker on the case.
