The vSphere Server doesn't have to be on a powerful machine. We have our vSphere Server running on a server that also handles our disk to disk backups as well as the disk to tape. We are using Symantec System Recovery along with Veeam Enterprise.

I mean you say you don't need a powerful machine for vcenter server. is that using sql express on the same machine, or is database on a full SQL server on another machine?

Their onsite guy is handling purchasing. I just tell them what we need.

Well, our vSphere Server has a quad core Xeon 3000 MHz proc with 8GB RAM... Versus our other machines that have 2 six core procs and 64GB RAM.

Sorry, I was referring to the response time. If they can afford it, I would get a 4 hour response time on production servers...

Do they have any type of site license with Microsoft?

I would go with Server 2012 Datacenter edition. It covers two physical processors and allows for unlimited virtuals. That will save them money so they dont have to buy an OS for each vm.

They went with next biz day, which aggravated me because 4 hour was only like 300 more. But it is why I am stressing redundancy and failover strategies.

I think they have software assurance for enterprise addition from 2008, but I'm told they purchased the SA step up so we will have 2012 datacenter.
