I found this information on another site. These numbers are encouraging in light of the concerns in recent years on the Scaup populations and their breeding success.

Squatty, wasn't there a fairly large die-off in the upper midwest a few years ago due to some type of bacteria? If so, seems they made a good rebound, if there wasn't, then my bad trusting my memory!

Could have been. But these numbers could be scewed due to the mild winter weather we had in the region. The mid-winter counts are really just one piece of the puzzle. While it is incouraging it's not the only thing we need to base the future of the Scaup on.

As far as the long-term averages go, its not looking good.
Be proactive about improving public waterfowl habitat in South Carolina. It's not going to happen by itself, and our help is needed. We have the potential to winter thousands of waterfowl on public grounds if we fight for it.
