    Default Tree ID Help Needed...

What variety of tree does this look like?

A beaver had chewed it to the point of falling over last summer and I don't recall what kind of leaves were on it. I pulled it down yesterday so it wouldn't fall on one of my duck boxes. When I noted that it was pretty well dried out I got to wondering what kind of wood it was.

Btw, the section in the picture is approximately an 8" diameter and maybe 2' long...

    What's your call?

My first thought was sweet gum too. Beavers can't leave a sweet gum alone.

Those are red oak leaves. Hickory leaves are compound.

Hickory all day long. So many foresters(majors) on this site and no professional opinions?

hell i got a pile of firewood in my back yard, a mixture of sweet gum and hickory. its damn hard to tell the difference by lookin at the bark. now lookin at the actual wood is a no brainer. i didnt realize how similiar the bark was till i got them all cut into logs and put in a pile.... if i remember when i get home ill snap a few pics and see if yall pros can tell the difference. woodiesc, post a pic of the cut end of the wood. hickory will be a darker brown and sometimes have an even draker center. sweetgum will have a blonder more uniform color throughout. also, when dried out, sweetgum will be heavier than hickory...... if you want to split it, it will be super easy to tell. sweet gum has real stringy fibers, and hickory is real chunky looking.

I would say Sweet Gum. Looking at the pic the only leaves I can make out are Sweetgum and Southeren Red Oak.
