Overhead views/orthos/aerials are vector data, no way to make them raster data far as I know.

The Bing imagery seems to move a little faster for me, this website will walk you through loading it.

Yep. It is pretty cool actually. You add the BING map imagery file to your map just like any shp file. It projects on the fly to the projection your working in. It shows imagery worldwide. You can turn it off/on like any other shp file.

It also automatically updates to show the most current data

gonna have to check that out, im about to throw this computer across the road rite now, my old aerials dont take no time to load, and to start with these dont, but i had to put a Coordinate System on them so i could measure distances and mark stuff and they are slow loading as ever, takes 10 mins just to open the file and bring up all the tiles

You can.....but trust me when I tell you you don't want to.

Haven't used it much in a while, but could you not set the visible scale low enough that they only open when say 1:10000 so you're only having to view a single tile and only a small part of it at that?

    Mosaic.

Not so sure about your fisrt claim there chief. Maybe but some task that could be done in 10 seconds would take 10 months

2nd part of advice may just work for him and is very easy to do.

Right click on shp file > properties > General tab > Don't show this layer when zoomed to XXXX

Don't care if you're sure or not. I am sure and that's all that matters to me. It's called Auto Cad Map 3D, it's part of Civil 3D and I use it on occasion to keep from having to bounce back and forth between ACad and ArcMap. Again, yes, you can do what he is doing on Auto Cad, but I'll say the second part again as well......YOU DON'T WANT TO.

Speaking of ArcGis can someone recommend me a decent class for a refresher course around Florence or Myrtle Beach?

Last version I used was 3.2 (I think) about 10 years ago.

I can't help you with those areas, but I can say "boy are you in for a surprise!"

3.2, IMHO, was a MUCH better version, but nowhere near as easy to figure stuff out on if you can follow what I'm saying.
