Hunter Dead After Fall in Town Of Murray

ORLEANS COUNTY, NY ( WKBW / release ) A Town Of Murry man is dead after an apparent fall Monday from a tree stand while deer hunting.

58 year old Michael J. Haffly left his residence at approximately 6:30a.m. on Monday to go deer hunting in an area off the 16700 block of Telegraph Road in the Town of Murray.

His wife called 911 when he failed to return home after dark.

Orleans County Sheriff's deputies and firefighters from four area departments ( Holley, Clarendon, Albion & Brockport ) began searching for the individual at approximately 9:00p.m. They were assisted by a Mercy Flight helicopter based in Batavia.

Ground search crews located the victim at approximately 10:26p.m. in an area several hundred yards north of Telegraph Road. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Orleans County Coroner Scott M. Schmidt and transported to the Monroe County Medical Examiners Office in Rochester for autopsy.

It appears that Haffly was installing an aluminum tree stand when he fell. Both he and the stand were lying on the ground at the base of the tree about 15 feet below the point where he had attempted the installation.

The investigation was conducted by Deputy T.C. Marano, assisted by Deputy En.N Fuller, Lieutenant R.E. Perry, and Investigator K.M. Strickland Jr. The NYS Department of Environmental Conservation Police was notified of the incident.

A Franklin and 45 seconds of installation at the truck could have prevented that.

    Tragic.

I can tell some horror stories about falling out of trees, as we all can.

I've also had my share of 'close calls'.

When I was young I'd break a bone just to impress the ladies. Nowadays, nope! Ain't worth it, takes way too long to heal.

I have to admit that I do sit without one, but only when I'm in a ground blind.

I where one bow hunting religously. His second mistake was not telling anyone where he was going to sit.

It scares me to think back over the years when I was younger how high we would climb in the old Warren and Sweat Rifleman stands with only a 7/16" bolt and wing nut between us and the ground. Only still here by Grace of God I.

Also use to hunt out of loc on stands a lot and NEVER thought about a harness, sad folks have to die for us to learn

I am getting older and I guess wiser or more cautious but I do not get in my climber anymore without harness and also wear it in ladder stands now as well. My balance is not what it used to be

Just to let you know, there is a recall out on some of the HSS harnesses. It is related to the pin coming out of the carabiner. Cheap Chinese made components. I can't tell you how many counterfeit fasteners we have found at work.

If it ain\'t accurate at long distance, then the fact that it is flat shooting is meaningless.

Any harness shipped/sold after about mid-October is good to go.

The problem isn't in the harness itself, but the carabiner that's used with the tree strap.
