Im trying to get a mental picture here...

    scenario:

You are fishing for trout near a dock on the icw.
You hook into a gator, and he heads straight for the shade.
Do you pull back on the rod to keep him away from the oyster covered pilings, or do you actually reel in line as fast as you can?

    I use both.
However, whether it be a zebco 33, baitcaster, or a spinning reel it matters not.
The reel is just used to close the distance and hold the line.
The rod is used for horsing and fighting.

    carry on.
Be proactive about improving public waterfowl habitat in South Carolina. It's not going to happen by itself, and our help is needed. We have the potential to winter thousands of waterfowl on public grounds if we fight for it.

bog's had it all along. the rod does the grunt work.

Pfleuger trion is a good one. I've been using them a good while now.

the shimano calcutta's and curados are the better reels on the higher dolla spectrum...but I've seen curados not throw braid very well on occassion. odd.

baitcasters are deadly accurate. and seem easier on the wrist/hand when casting repeatedly.

when throwing topwaters or the like all morning my preference is a baitcaster...

it's really a personal preference on whether to use spinning or casting though. But at least the reels mentioned on this thread are decent.

It's the rod and not the reel that supplies leverage.

The rod tip goes up to gain line and the reel stores and secures the line when the rod tip goes down.

I've got a Quantum Iron that I don't even remember buying but it has outlasted several higher priced reels. I think I originally got it for the little guy but he hated the baitcasters.

I've used it for years inshore and offshore and caught a lot of fish with it. The drag is still consistent and smooth.

well if you are throwing a 3/4 oz. crankbait yeah you can be pretty accurate, but throwing 1/8 or 1/4 oz jigs(the average of what people fish with inshore, at least where i come from), you cant do jack shit. believe me, ive tried it before. It doesnt work out.

    No shit right?

I thought it was a question asking about an inshore reel...specifically baitcaster. Reckon my tiagra 30 on the med-light ugly stick light will be enough to horse one up?

I was just poking fun at folks whose methods and what they use are always so much better than everyone else's.

If you are good enough, you can use a baitcaster paired with a well balanced rod as an extension of your arm.

I would buy a Abu w/ a clicker, med/hvy rod. Get a solid one that works. No need to spend a ton of money. The whole thing will be useless ina few seasons anyway.

I have one baitcaster set-up for inshore. Its fun to throw spooks and other topwaters with in the summer. I use a Shimano Clarus 7'6" rod and a Shimano Cruxis reel. The Cruxis is a great inshore reel and is a lot like the Curado. It probably costs a good bit less. You should check one out.

Just saw one on ebay. You can "buy it now" for $69.99 + $8 shipping. Thats a pretty good deal.
