Default How to copy a mounted map

I have a map of the plantation I hunt on. It is one the old style timber maps which was drawn in an artistic manner. I would like to have a high quality reproduction of it made. The problem is, it is mounted (glued) on a sheet of mansonite. It took it to the local reproduction company and they told me they can't do it if it was mounted.

I know it can be done, because when we had Hamilton Ridge sold out from under us by IP, there was a map on the wall which was similar and one of the club members had it reproduced and it framed up beautifully. I have lost his name and e-mail address so I can not call him for where he had it done.

Does anyone have any suggestions of a company that can reproduce this map. I would like for them to be in the Lowcountry or Savannah, if possible.

Some architects and land surveyors have in house machines large enough to accomodate. The county assessors can do it, however they probably won't. We have full size plats reproduced all the time in Beaufort at Murr's Printing on Boundary St. downtown.

How big is it? A good high resolution photo of it may be the ticket...

Creekdog - Thanks I will call them. The fact it is rigidly mounted seems to a major problem for most reproduction companies. Hopefully, not for them.

SwampRat - 29" x 23" - a good digital image would be wonderful. Do you know of anyone or any company that can do such a thing? That way it can be touched up, recolored a little (it is a little faded), and smaller maps of portions of the place cut out and printed.

The right lens and a good SLR digital camera, with indirect lighting, should do it. I'd look around for a local photo bug that would do it for free.

    SM,

I'd be more than happy to give it a try for ya. Been wanting to get down to Beaufort anyway and do some shooting @ Sheldon ruins.

I have a digital SLR w/ an extreme wide-angle...it just may work. One image file shot in RAW will yield a 70mb file....trust me it's a ship-load of data. Hit me w/ a PM and let's see what we can make of it if interested.

that things need to be shot on a copy stand- unless you want bows and curves- check your local newspaper to see if they still have a stat camera in house

I could probably copy it if I had paper big enough, a big enough table, and scale/bearings/distance. Probably wouldn't be as nice of a job as what Idlewild could do for you and I am nowhere close to Beaufort.

Creekdog - Thanks for the idea - I will call them. Have you ever dealt with idm Print on Burton Hill Road? Their website seems to indicate they can scan and copy large items at high resolution.

Idlewild - I have shot you a PM

Turd - it is mounted (glued) to a sheet of Masonite, so it is both flat and rigid. But the idea of going to local newspaper is a great one, if the deal with Idlewild does not work out. Thanks

SCTimber - Thanks for the offer. It is 21.5" x 28" actual dimensions.

ive scanned large documents before (3'x4') using a regular scanner and just scanning different areas of the document. basically, you will end up with 25 or 30 scans and then you have to past them together. being that your document is slightly attached this would be sorta hard, but if you could get a scanner that you could hold up there (and hold it steady) this could be possible.

There's a guy in Mt. Pleasant that does Giclee (pronounced zshee clay') art in which a photo is enhanced and dithered up to look like a painting. Some of his stuff is really awesome. I'd bet he could do it or steer you in the right direction. Really nice guy.

I am sure I could take the lid off my umax powerlook 1100 scanner and make multiple scans and bring together in photoshop if you can not have it done feasibly elsewhere.

I have taken an image and enlarged it 30x40 inches and added roads, colorized etc. to make a hunt club map indicating stands then framed it as a gift for a landowner- made quite a conversation piece.
