I have found in the past you can flood the smallest pothole with bottled water, take a can of black spray paint to paint the bottle black, and use them as decoys.

great to hear you had a decent trip. Congrats!!! For us the birds were the best colored we have seen in the last 10 years and we started on opening day. Not much trouble picking drakes from hens. I am surprised it was different where ya'll were at.
