2008 May Breeding Waterfowl Habitat Conditions
At the Service Regulations Committee meeting yesterday, the USFWS staff reported that habitat conditions were very poor in much of the Prairie Pothole region during waterfowl population surveys in May, probably the worst they have seen overall since 2002. In contrast, habitat conditions were generally good to excellent in the parklands to the north and across eastern Canada. Despite very low pond numbers in the mid-continent region, ducks were quite abundant. This may result in relatively high population estimates, but poor recruitment in 2008.
