What actually kills my ass is that he knows what kinds of birds those are that he takes the pictures of. I know, anybody can look them up but to talk with him, he really knows them. Now, how many of y'all would have really known that was a Yellow Belly Sparrow.

Hey Squat, do what Audubon did. Kill those things and then do the pictures. No more waiting.

DNR has a big banding operation for those rascals down there.

Tip: sprinkle a shot of vodka on your bird feeder.
Your feathered friends will eat and be merry, soon getting blistered.
They will usually fall to the ground stone drunk just under the feeder.

Pick them up. Carefully remove the bands for your personal satisfaction(mind their tiny legs)
Place your drunken bird in a shoe box with a washcloth.
In a couple hours he will sober up and fly away, thankful that you removed his/her shackles.

i don't quite understand the banding operations of non-game birds.
I wouldn't think the band return rate would justify its funding.
Seemingly they would die from natural causes therefore allowing no data to be recorded, because the birds body would deteriorate in the woods somewhere.

I'm sure DNR traps them and checks up on them.
I need to read up on this subject.

Rubberhead? You know the workings on this type of thing?

    From DNR's website:

Last year, the painted bunting project had more than 4,000 data hits to the Painted Bunting Observer Team Web site from Painted Bunting Observer Team citizen volunteers in the Carolinas, and the team captured and banded 1,500 individual painted buntings. "When we began, most of our citizen volunteers wanted to know if the same birds were returning to their feeders after migration every year," said Barnhill. "With the bands, our volunteers can actually identify individual birds and know if the same ones are still visiting." Each painted bunting receives three pre-determined colors and one silver band with inscribed numbers. This silver band is a federal band from the U.S. Bird Banding Laboratory. The bands are easily viewed with binoculars.

All I know about non-game banding is that recovery and re-capture rates are very, very low compared to game species. They do a lot of flagging with unique combination of colored bands to help identify individuals without having to have them in-hand. I'm sure somebody, somewhere cares about the location and timing on the bird Squatty photographed. It's may be some graduate student's thesis that few people really care about, but Painted Buntings are a species of interest.

That being said, the green one may be a money band?...

I've already reported it just so you all will know. I'm also going to do my best to try and get the band info. from the folks doing the Painted Bunting studies. The will be able to determine what the band numbers are by the other 3 colored bands.

Looking at the shots of the Male I did get up in the trees it appears that he's banded too! I'm going back there tomorrow

What would be the purpose of the money band on a non-game species?
