    Default Squirrel Doggin’ 2024

We had a blast as usual

I had forgotten how aggravating a puppy can be. I had also forgotten how rewarding it can be to watch a puppy put it all together and start doing it on their own.

Outstanding season, especially with the kids and the cat doc’s squad.

Lots of fun was had by many! That's what it's all about!

SO -- what were you using the flashlight for on that one tree?

So that was actually pretty cool

There was a broken off tree on a creek bank that had a hole about knee high that ran all the way through up til where the tree was broken off about 7’ high. Jake had started pawing at the hole and biting at it so I figured there was a squirrel in there. I looked in with the light and I could see a ball with two ears sticking up. I was hunting with Glenn and his crew that morning so I called the criplets over there to let them have a look before I pulled/ran it out of the hole.

I took stick and tried to poke it from the bottom and it never would come out the top so I tried from the top down. Still nothing, so I looked again with the light and could tell it was down closer to the bottom but at this point I realized it wasn’t a squirrel. I could see talons and feathers. I had the kids step back and I got the dogs back and then I reached back in there and pulled out a screech owl. Held it in my hands for just a second and gave it a toss. It flew and landed about 20yds away and let us look at it for the longest time

This was all I could see with the flashlight

ETA: Glad to see the screech made the photo dump. That was one surprised owl!

    Livin right.

I can't tell you how many times my boys have asked if I had set something up with you. This is what...two years in a row we've missed out. I blame myself and hopefully can right that wrong next year.

His mom dropped him off at the house and we were off. We got out of the truck to hunt and I told him he could go ahead and load his gun. I asked him if he had plenty of shells and he started grinning. He said “ my daddy told me just to get a handful of shells out of box and not to be wasting them, so I took 5 shells each out of 5 different boxes so he wouldn’t realize I got a whole box worth”
