Default 1995 Mercury 40 hp technician

Tommy that works for me has a 1995 Mercury 40 hp outboard. It's the 4 cyl 2 carb engine. The issue is at full throttle it acts like vehichle that hit the rev limiter (cuts out) If you name it, it's been replaced. Two shops have had it and no luck. The guy in Elloree looked at it and said it runs fine.

Not looking for ideas, but more so of any old school Mercury techs out there.

Does Harvey over at McLean Marine in Sumter still work on those older Mercs?

Either Harvey or Mr Tyler near Lake City. Both know their stuff and won't screw you.

If you can find another one to swap brain boxes on, I expect you'll find your problem.

    Try DP Marine in Chapin.

Has a new one on it. Doesn’t mean that the new one is good.

When it start cutting out the timing light even slows down, so you feel like it’s electrical.

The only reason I say this is I saw on an old Force motor I got going for a buddy. My man in W. Cola had one on the shelf that he let me swap and my problems went away.

I only saw the problem at higher RPMs. I'm assuming that the electronics were wigging out at WOT.

$200 fix on a motor that had me at my wits' end...

This motor is the inline 4cyl, right?

Tater might be onto something with the stator, but I feel like you'd have more problems than a stutter box at WOT.

I'm also assuming you've verified RPMs at WOT are below the limiter with a tach that's worth a shit...?

    It's a Merc, homie.

If it idles, it won't run. If it runs, it won't idle.

At least, that's what my daddy had to say about them black heads.

It's run true, for the most part. But, he was a crazy man... so, there's that!
