    Default Dead Hogs

The Congaree has claimed a lot of hogs in the sections I hunt between Lower Richland and Gadsden. Walked this morning and saw buzzards everywhere and there was the stench of dead animals for several miles we walked. Saw numerous dead hogs that had drowned with theIMG_6837.jpgIMG_6834.jpg repeated high waters we have had the last 6 weeks. Walked this same route 30 days ago and saw 150+ hogs in 90 minutes- no group of more than 5.

Saw one set of tracks and no rooting. I bet over 90% are dead.

Won’t take long and they will be back

All the squat truck kids with there 30k Havock boats and the racing Yamaha or Tohatsu engines have been working on them. My Snap stories have been blown up with videos. I’m talking piles of dead hogs.

No kill footage but I’m sure the ones up in the hill that get shot don’t make the picture for social media.

    hey pbiz.

you can hear whatever you want.

but to say "90% of the hogs are dead" is just funny.
I'm old. I've seen a number of floods. I still see hogs.

I have two tracts "on the hill" just off the bluff. You would think they would be over run with hogs. There are none. Lots of deer but no hogs in weeks.

I know there will be more down the road. I'm just glad to have some relief.

The flood water takes it's toll on deer as well.

That is a fact. I'm on the Bluff on high ground and have just started seeing hogs in the last couple weeks after months without having any. The high water definitely pushed some my way.

A lot of variables here but agree that the flooding event do take a toll on hog and deer numbers. It seems the worst is when the flood event rise quickly which takes out high areas of refuge quickly. Hog and deer are very good swimmers, but take out the high ground areas that would provide refuge and they clearly struggle.

Don't forget about the turkeys and flooding event.... Not so much of a problem not but as we progress into the nesting season it is a major issue. Historically, the flood planes receive flood waters during the winter months and this is typically a gradual flooding event. As well as the backing out of flood waters. In more recent years, flooding events have become more common in the spring and summer. Specifically, the Savannah River Swamp as been flooded during a large part of the spring / summer for the past 4 years. In fact, the swamp was flooded for majority of the turkey season the past two years. Not just the sloughs but zero high ground. It has had a detrimental effect on the wildlife, specifically turkeys on one tract of land that i know of with thousands of acres of Savannah River Swamp. The hogs and deer have certainly taken a beating also.

Journal of Wildlife Mgmt Volume 61 No 2 covers turkey reproduction in areas subject to flooding, if anyone is interested in a good read. 2017-2021 spring flooding in Sav river definitely hurt pig and turkey. Had a nice bounce back these last couple years it seems. This week will be the first time we flooded in awhile. Hope its just a quick flush and drops right back down.

Pigs spend most of the summer deep in the swamp close to the river. These areas are typically 5 degrees cooler.
As fall approaches they migrate to the higher ground to eat acorns. They spend the winter on higher ground, further from the actual river, where thick cut downs are available. A quick summer flood is worse on their population than a winter flood.

At least that's what I've noticed in the Pee Dee swamp.
