They are pretty good against predators and roost high, like 80ft+. Problem is they will wander and if any neighbors are feeding cats outdoors, they will move to that property. They love cat food and it's actually really good for their diet. If you can't pen them, they will move on...

2 questions to think about. 1) why's he giving them away? 2) why do you want/need them?
They're everywhere in south Florida. Personally, I think they're a public nuisance but do what you want.

I’d imagine that they would get the gobblers raising sand when they squawk. Kinda of a queer Miami Vice sort of vibe if you ask me.

He's giving them away because he's a tenant/caretaker on a farm that's getting sold and he has to vacate. They free ranged there and stuck around for years. I don't need them, but that's never stopped me from doing ill-advised stuff before. The takeway seems to be: keep them penned up for a couple of weeks before letting them out, then keep plenty of food around, and yep, includiing cat food, and they should stick around. My main concern is predators. I gave up on chickens long ago because of all the massacres.

Nothing's guaranteed but they will fight a hawk, and like I said they roost as high as they can if you have tall trees. I found them to be the least annoying of backyard fowl, and I've had most everything through the years.

Be proactive about improving public waterfowl habitat in South Carolina. It's not going to happen by itself, and our help is needed. We have the potential to winter thousands of waterfowl on public grounds if we fight for it.
