Default Spotlighting Deer and Legal Shooting Hours

South Carolina is the only state to allow legal shooting light to extend to one hour after sunset, and one hour before sunrise. (I think)

Do you think this should be changed to 1/2 hour?

Do you think it should be illegal to spotlight deer in SC during legal shooting hours?

Many rifle hunters have moved to thermal scopes.

Many bowhunters are sticking with traditional spotlighting. I’m told this is currently legal correct?

I’m curious where the general hunting public’s thoughts stand with this.

The hours of legal deer hunting take into account the need to use a flashlight to get to the stand and get back to the truck. It's hard to write a law that prohibits being armed and holding a light afield that doesn't make it illegal to get back after safe shooting hours. If you don't think you'll get burned for shooting a deer with a light, you need to invite a warden on your next hunt. If you shoot a deer with a thermal during late legal hours, you might survive in court but if you try that with infrared or projected visible light, you broke the law.

Using a light on your bow before legal shooting time closes is 100% legal. Same as thermal imagers before that time. That was straight from the green jeans mouth. He told me it’s basically a loop hole they can’t control under the current laws. I have no Idea if this is 100% correct but that’s what I was told by one of the game wardens in saluda county.

I don't know the law but a game warden saying that doesn't make it true by a long shot.

You need more to worry about if this is what you are thinking about. There is no shortage of deer below the lakes so if someone whacks one 7 minutes after legal shooting light who gives a shit.

That is correct. The only person I know to use a light on their bow was a game warden. He also had a pressure switch on his bow so he didn’t have to turn the light on until go time.

Pressure switch is the only way to go. And having a game warden tell you something g doesn’t mean much sometimes. My buddy once convinced a game warden the state hadn’t mailed him his federal stamp was why he didn’t have it. This was before you could purchase online from DNR and still had to go to post office or a sporting goods store....so just saying.

If you haven’t seen a big buck illuminated by a full moon in that last bit of legal light you are missing out on one of the prettiest sights in the deer woods.

Has anyone been convicted of using a light during legal shooting hours on a bow to kill a deer?
