    Default Old #12

The old #12 Griswold makes up a roux like it's nobody's business. While traveling or in someone else's kitchen, I've tried to make roux in stainless pans and coated pans of all sorts but always seemed to end up with little black burnt specs. Not so with the old #12. She's the best antique store pickup I've ever made.

    Today's rainy day gumbo:

And for today's lunch while working on the gumbo, collard & blackeyed pea soup (compliments of my neighbor) with a grilled ham & cheese sammich:

dare we discuss those spoons? the top one looks like bed/bath/&beyond wooden dowel with plastic spoon glued on it.

the metals ones look like they were bought from the same antique store.

    what gives?

Teefs is referring to these - the handmade, heirloom quality curly maple spoon set I made and sold to him quite awhile back. The set eventually included a wooden fork as well albeit a little later.

As much as I hate to admit it, 2th is right about the spoon in the 4th pic above - it's part of a sterling silver set I bought from an antique dealer as a Christmas present for my wife.

Here we are 15+ years since I made those spoons and I've yet to run across another maple plank as nice as the one those came from.

Dang it, HS, that's quite nice!

Been eyeing those Smitheys for a while. How does it cook, HS? I also think I like the thinner pan they make.
