    Default VHF Channels

What are the most frequently used channels by sportfish boats out of Charleston, Georgetown, etc?
Other than 16, what channel(s) do you usually monitor?

Unless your radio has been opened by a professional, you are wasting your time. Most boats will be on expansion channels a standard vhf doesnt have.

What's the reasoning for being on an expansion channel? Better range? Communicate with other boats more discreetly?

I would go with the discretion answer.

Never heard of “expansion channels” before, but my guess would be that they are existing channels with offsets programmed in. Basically you listen on one frequency (channel), which is everyone on that channel, but you transmit on the offset which is a slightly higher or lower frequency.

With an offset your transmission will only be heard by someone that knows your offset and has it programmed in their radio. Hence the discretion.

Basically "private" channels.....like cops can switch to a channel to avoid being heard on scanners.
Many years ago, Oregon Inlet smugglers use to have a guy at the Norfolk Naval Base that worked on the military radios
and for a fee, he would take a pile of your radios and give them back to you with a "private" channel

My BIL had Barnwell County crystals years ago. Some good and eye opening entertainment.

You mean there’s more channels for the offshore lingo soap opera? Gracious, I talk on mine to get a radio check and to ask if the fuel dock is open when I get in. Like a bunch of teenage girls out there some days.
Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn't go so far as to call a dog filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a dog's got personality. Personality goes a long way.
