    Default Cooper Ridge Road

This dirt road off hwy 45 near Alvin used to be the only access to a rather large public hunting property. It now has a gate across it that says "Private Drive". Does anyone here know about this? Legalities?

Do you or the State of South Carolina pay the taxes on the dirt below the gate?

It’s currently in litigation. The gate will be coming down at some point. When that will happen is another question. But it will happen.

I believe it is a public road that runs thru private land for a short distance before it goes into WMA.
Haven't been in there in a few years but there's some pretty woods in there.

Yea used to hunt back there for years. Gated off to prevent access to public land now. BS but seen this trick before. Got stuck for an hr coming out one day when they were squeezing a mobile home back in their private piece off the access rd.

This happens a good bit down around the no name lake bordering WMAs.
Be proactive about improving public waterfowl habitat in South Carolina. It's not going to happen by itself, and our help is needed. We have the potential to winter thousands of waterfowl on public grounds if we fight for it.

You'd be surprised. They didn't just put it up yesterday.

Got bolt cutters? A public road is a public road.

A Dozer/Front End Loader would leave a more lasting impression.

A few short years ago I would've drove up to that gate and made an ass of myself in one of a half dozen ways.
But I'm all grown up now.

There's 250,000 acres to hunt in the Francis Marion. I'd just go somewhere else these days. Plus, I'm currently hunting some private land about 5 miles away that's holding a few good bucks and a pile of does.
With that said, Cooper Ridge Rd. takes you all the way back to the edge of the Santee River Swamp across the river from the Wee Tee WMA. It's a large tract of some of the most beautiful swamp bottoms you'll ever see. I've killed a few deer in that area back in the day.
On second thought, I might swing by there after the morning hunt tomorrow and see how much trouble I can get into. You guys gonna cover my bail?

I’ll chip in. Park at the gate and ride a bike in there.

No thanks. The last bike ride I took on WMA was an opening day dove hunt around the corner from there a few years ago. About stroked out and had a heart attack.

Metal gate? A portable welder would make a lasting impression on whoever put it there.
Don't want other folks using public roads? Fine, you're gonna have to work for it yourself.

Yeah I haven't noticed that yet. Going to have to make a point to hunt the area now. Some people just can't help but be jerks.

Pretty easy to see who owns the two parcels on either side of the road, neither appear to be a residence.

It’s as private as the size of the wallet of the man who owns the gate.
