Actually started in West Virginia coal country. Strikers marched for the right to unionize and wore red scarfs around their necks and were called red necks. That devolved into a shooting war. Today usually means crass or unsophisticated. Some consider an insult which it is usually meant to be. Others consider a compliment. Depends who calls you a redneck.

^^^ must be the yankee definition.
A buddy sold a lab puppy to a guy from Andrews. When he saw him a couple of years later, he asked how the dog was working out. Andrews guy puffs up and says "Damn fine, damn fine. Whup any dog at th' landin". That's a redneck.
I was driving through south Georgia several years ago and saw a hunter who was black get out of a little jacked up Toyota pickup with a dog box and a front license plate that said "Blackneck".
