    Default #23

Been hunting right out my back door a good bit this season. It’s 3 min out the door to the spot I’ve been sitting in my turkey lounger. Since Oct 1 I’ve let 22 walk back there. This one was #23 and there’s still a few others on camera I want a crack at

    Well done!

    Nice.

Few years ago it was the last day of the season and I needed one more deer for the freezer. Whenever I stepped outside onto the porch I noticed a doe in the corner of the yard. I usually don't shoot my "yard deer", but it sure made getting that last deer a lot easier.

    Nice one!
“Duck hunting gives a man a chance to see the loneliest places …blinds washed by a rolling surf, blue and gold autumn marshes, …a rice field in the rain, flooded pin-oak forests or any remote river delta. In duck hunting the scene is as important as the shooting.” ~ Erwin Bauer, The Duck Hunter’s Bible, 1965

    Thanks fellas,

As to the rifle, it’s a Henry single shot chambered in .308.
A bit of a review. Overall I like the gun, great wood, well made as far as fit and finish goes and was accurate with the iron sights before I put a scope on it ( leupold vxr 3x9x50 with the fire dot). I’m shooting Hornady superpeeformance sst 165gr and it will put 3 well within an inch at 100yds. I’ve hunted with this gun intermittently for 3 season and have killed 7 with it. I don’t get the best blood trails with the sst but the ones that didn’t drop never ran further than 75yds.

    The cons,

Factory trigger sucked, I ended up buying a different spring for it and cutting some of the coil off to get it to a decent pull. Still not as crisp as I’d like but much better and could probably improve even more if I’d get around to polishing/honing it.

The hammer is a poor design in my opinion. It sticks too far up which comes into play with mounting the scope. When I shot it the first few times with iron sights you could get a good cheek weld. When I mounted the scope, the way the hammer protrudes upward forced me to go with a medium height set of rings which causes it to be more difficult to get a quick and consistent cheek weld for looking through the scope. I have a leather cheek pad / ammo cuff on the stock for when I hunt which is a big help for getting settled in where I want to be when shooting. I think the only way to 100% remedy the problem would be to take it to a smith and let them cut the comb, making it adjustable. I plan to look around next year and see if I can find one willing to tackle that for me. I’ve even given some consideration to doing it myself with the help of a machinist friend
