I understand the Taliban doesn’t act with reason or logic, but why would they attack the airport (fleeing innocents), get into conflict with US troops leaving, etc?

They literally just have to “behave” a little longer, and they’ll have free range without any interference at all. Makes no sense to attack a retreating enemy that could potentially re-engage if they attack them.

Because this is what Trump negotiated with the taliban for the May 1st withdrawal. A peaceful withdrawal.

I entered the Army on 15 August 1989 at Ft Benning, GA. I retired 5 years ago. No matter who was President, who controlled Congress, the military never changed. There has been the rise and fall of adversaries, with many of them having never been reported except in the small talk of silent professionals. This is just a small blip on the radar of things that happen in this world. This isn’t a last second “oh shit” moment where we had to abandon military equipment at the last minute. Most of our major shit has BEEN gone. Contrary to what the click baiting media on all sides may make you think or believe, we are still the most lethal force on the face of the earth. Fk what you might hear from the average joe (no disrespect) out there… we could fk up China and Russia at the same time if we wanted to. Administrations come and go but those that dare are here forever.

Is this the same military who's leaders were in front of some committee last month singing the praises of CRT and social justice? Just asking because I sincerely hope what you posted is correct, but I'm afraid I have my doubts. The capability may be there but without the leaders on board, it ain't gonna happen
