Default How Much Land For A Loaf Of Bread

    Just curious...

In the United States, one acre of wheat yields an average 37.1 bushels of wheat.

A bushel of wheat yields 42 commercial loaves of white bread (one-and-a-half pound loaves).

One 60-pound bushel of wheat provides about 42 pounds of white flour, enough for about 70, 1 pound loaves of white bread.

    So, 37 bushels/acre x 70 loaves/bushel = 2590 loaves of bread/acre.

    So 1 loaf = 1 acre/2590 loaves x 43560 sq.ft / acre = 16.8 sq.ft/loaf

    Last question:

Is this the market price (money in the farmer's pocket), or is this the value added cost to the loaf of bread on the shelf?

That's the commodity price for wheat or market price.

I went to look up the average price for a loaf of bread because I was curious about it from the other perspective. And the article below hits on that exact topic. They are comparing the cost of bread to the price of wheat and inflation. I figured your math oriented mind might enjoy it too.

ETA: Bread is around 1.37 a loaf. Interestingly enough it is about the same as it was in 08, when wheat was almost $9 a bushell. The wheat is less than 10% of the cost of the loaf of bread you pay for.

    Excellent article. Very interesting.

That's about what I figured as far as the value of the farmer's contribution.

    Thanks!
