Made a Last minute trip to jocassee with the wife and boys yesterday. All the rain in the mountains had the waterfalls rolling strong.
Around 430 the winds picked up through the valley and in typical jocassee fashion which made the big water pretty sporty
Cutting across the big water to the ramp, my 7yo points in the distance (a good 300/400 yards away) and says “dad, I think they need help”. I honestly didn’t see anything but agreed to check it out. Once we got close we found 4 teenagers treading water, no life jackets holding onto a sunken canoe with little to no energy left.
I had to pull one over the side of the boat because he physically couldn’t swim to the ladder. In their current state treading in 215ft of water no closer than a half a mile to any shore, one kid said he only had a few more minutes left in him before going under.
Come to find out, they were camping at the park, and rented the canoe to try and make it to the cliff to jump off the top.
Here’s to hoping they learned a valuable lesson and thanking their lucky stars a 7yo was wise enough to see what appeared to be trouble and smart enough to speak out.
The hero of the day
