Default Black snake in the chicken coop

Found a black rat snake in the chicken coop earlier. He was working on the first egg, but dropped it as I was lifting him out. I tossed him across the yard and he took off under the kids’ playhouse. I assume he will be back. Am I fighting a battle that I’m gonna lose? I definitely would like to keep the snake around.

He'll be back in your coop unless you can snake-proof it. I'd rather have a few less field rats than one less egg sucking snake.

Name him Arnold. He'll be back. Drive him at least 5 miles away and turn him loose in the woods.

How many eggs can he possibly eat? How many rats can he eat or scare off? I'd pay a few eggs to keep rat damage and rat poop away.

My wife texted me last week and said she found the surprise I left her with a picture of a snake skin draped over her surfboard racks in the garage/barn. I texted her back that I didn't do it and it must be for real. I pulled the skin down and could hold the tip to my nose and the head was on the ground. We think it's a rat snake I turned loose in the garage last year. We haven't been seeing any evidence of rats for many months. Before him, I could catch a rat a week out there...a never ending supply. Wife told the neighbors to look out for him and don't hurt him. They said they've seen him a few times.

He won't eat enough to break you. Leave him be.

Leave the snake alone. You will be happy with the results in the long run

I’ve killed 6 black snakes and lost 5 Bantam chickens to them this spring. Three of them killed the five bantams. Two got swallowed, and three were too big to swallow, and they got to the shoulders and puked the rest back up. The other three snakes were swallowing eggs. Tractor Supply sells the ceramic eggs. I bought some heavy duty cage wire to replace the chicken wire on the house, and foamed up all the gaps. I also raise up the feeders at night, and set rat traps after the chickens go to bed. Pick them back up in the mornings and lower the feeders back down. Only killed a few rats.

They can eat a pile of eggs. And they do it every day.

I bet snakes eat more eggs than rats 2:1

Y'all keep believing the tree hugger tales about snakes being beneficial.

I interned at a chicken house one weekend and I saw a black snake outside my window that was 18’ long and I asked a guy about and he said “think about it.....THINK about it”.

Now all I can think about is how I shoulda caught that damn snake and sold it for $28K so I could buy me some volleyball players.....
