Default Diving on the "Hutton" (Ario) 7-14-18

We were headed to the Caribsea but the conditions were deteriorating as we approached the shoals so we headed to the wreck of the "Hutton". The wreck was identified as the Hutton in a 1946'ish survey and has been called that until recently. In fact, the wreck is really the Ario, and what has been known as the Papoose is really the Hutton.

I jumped in with the hook and tied us in. One of the charters asked me to run a reel to help with navigation. I had enough line to get within sight of the boilers and saw the manta. It stayed with me for 30 minutes, 20 of which we were alone. As the other divers got in the water they ultimately followed the line and joined in on the manta experience.

Here are a couple of short videos.

Cool swimming with a Manta! Nice vis too, wanted to get out Sun afternoon but didn't make it happen.

    Glad you got out!

Awesome! I've never seen one quite that big around here.

Awesome video. That wreck was my first saltwater spearfishing location. The viz looks a lot better than when I was on it.

I’ve dove with mantas a few times. Very docile and lethargic looking creatures but with a few flaps of their “wings”, they can get the heck out of dodge.

The inshore viz has been quite good. It was 60-70’ when I got to the bottom.

Like most of the wrecks these days there is a “resident” shark. Those long, shallow spearfishing dives are pretty much a guarantee for a meeting with Mr. Sandbar.

And that's exactly what happened! 2 fish in and a rather inquisitive sand bar shark showed up circling. I've got a YouTube video of it but it's not the greatest due to the viz.

I loved the Caribsea. Those sand tigers are a trip!! The U-352 was an awesome dive and we had 70' to 100' of viz on it! I definitely need to make it north again soon!

Be glad it was only circling you! Head on a swivel means more when it's your butt on the line. I've put up some videos of the Caribsea on here. Definitely a dive to remember if you like sharks.

When you come back, try to dive the Schurz. It's my favorite regular dive destination.
