    Default Chevy 5.3

Looking for a weekend SUV. I have a daily driver issued by work but want something to hunt out of. I have narrowed it down to either a 4Runner or an old Tahoe. I understand Toyota has a history of of really stacking the miles on a motor but 4Runner is a little small for me. Anybody had good or bad experiences with the 5.3 V8 found in the Z71 Tahoes?

Find an early model Series 100 or 80 Land Cruiser. A little bigger than the 4Runner.
Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn't go so far as to call a dog filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a dog's got personality. Personality goes a long way.

I have seen one that I liked but said it had an undiagnosed engine rattle and a superficial crack on the head that seeps oil. I do like those cruisers too

That 5.3 is a solid motor if the oil has been changed along the way.
If it has AFM (active fuel management), pay KRT to delete it and save the lifters. Ask me how I know

A 4.7 in a Toyota Land Cruiser would be what I would be after, personally. What years are you looking at in Tahoes?

Early 2000’s. The landcruiser I saw was a 97 with factory lockers. 217,000 miles. The engine issue scares me a little. This truck will only see 10 miles or so a week. Hunt where we live with the exception of ducks

I love my Sequoia. Its basically a tundra. It has the 4.7 which is a solid motor. It pulls everything I put behind it. You can pick one up for stupid cheap. For a work/hunting/weekend truck it's a pretty good rig.

The 99-06 5.3 before the AFM are some reliable engines, there are plenty out there with 300k plus miles that are still going strong. Same goes for the old 5.7 in the 90's just as long as they were taken care of.

I bought mine with 220k. It was cheap. I think you can find one with 200k for around 3 to 4 thousand. I would hold out for one with less miles. Not that I wouldn't entertain one with that many miles.

My 2010 5.3... Had Kevin delete the AFM around 100k when I took ownership. No issues, change the oil and rock on.

The 4.7 in my ‘99 Series 100 has 254k and runs like a scalded dog. The ‘97 you found is a Series 80 and has a straight 6. Great engine just not very high HP which doesn’t matter for what you want. If you look at it, make sure it actually has factory lockers, some schmucks will throw the switch on one and say it does. A 97 80 should have front and rear lockers IIRC, the 100 has a center locker.

Probably not. A friend's dad lost his in Hurricane Matthew due to flooding and had to sadly total it with 489k still going strong.
