Default Preview 2018: Top 30 Quarterbacks

These midsummer college football articles are just laughable.

    30. Caleb Evans, Jr. ULM

Coming off a 2,878-yard passing, 13 rushing score season, he’s one of the nation’s most exciting all-around quarterbacks. Get ready for him to be a weekly statistical superstar you need to go out of your way to see.

    29. Brent Stockstill, Sr. Middle Tennessee

Back after missing half of last season hurt, he should be a lock for 4,000 yards and at least 30 scores – if he can stay healthy. He’ll be one of the nation’s most efficient passers.

    28. TaQuon Marshall, Jr. Georgia Tech

The passing game? He’s working on it. However, when it comes to getting the Georgia Tech offense moving, he’s exactly what the team needs. He’ll be a force again after running for 1,146 yards and 17 scores.

    27. Justice Hansen, Sr. Arkansas State

The former Oklahoma transfer threw a few too many picks last season (16), but he also bombed away for close to 4,000 yards and 37 scores. He’ll put up massive numbers as he takes ASU to the new Sun Belt championship game.

    26. Tyree Jackson, Jr. Buffalo

Get ready for him to be one of the interesting hot prospects on the NFL scouting circuit as the year goes on. He’s 6-7 and 245 pounds with an arm to put the ball anywhere on the field – and he can run, too. Hurt for a stretch last season, he still threw for close to 2,100 yards and 12 scores with three picks.

    25. Tyler Huntley, Jr. Utah

Can he make the offense sing in the second year of the new style? The Utes will still run the ball, and the receiving talent is just okay, but they’re also doing more downfield passing. The interceptions have to slow down after throwing ten, but he’ll be a dangerous dual-threat playmaker.

    24. Nathan Rourke, Jr. Ohio

He came in from the JUCO ranks and threw for 2,203 yards and 17 scores, and ran for 907 yards and 21 touchdowns. He even caught a touchdown pass. Expect a lot more of the same for what might just be a better Ohio offense.

    23. Brett Rypien, Sr. Boise State

One of college football’s most accurate passers over the last three seasons, he’s hit 63% of his throws for almost 10,000 yards with 60 touchdowns. He won’t run much, but he’ll be good enough to lead the Broncos to a New Year’s Six game.

    22. Kelly Bryant, Jr. Clemson

This isn’t fair. Put him much, much higher if he becomes the full-time starter again for the entire year. However, he’ll have to push out a guy who’s a lot better. Coming off a 2,802-yard, 13 touchdown, 14 rushing score season, he’s good enough to lead Clemson to the national title … if he gets the job.

    21. Mason Fine, Jr. North Texas

A smallish, fun baller, he’ll be at the helm of one of college football’s most dangerous offenses, coming off a 4,052-yard, 31-score season. Get ready for him to bomb away and push for a 40-touchdown pass campaign for the electrifying attack.

    20. Kyler Murray, Jr. Oklahoma

Not an Oakland A quite yet, he’s got the flash and speed to be a special runner who can keep the Sooner O going. He’s not going to throw like Baker Mayfield did, but that’s not going to matter so much when he’s taking off and adding a new dimension to the attack.

    19. Dwayne Haskins, Soph. Ohio State

The 6-3, 214-pounder has the arm, the mobility, and the upside to not just take over the Buckeye starting quarterback job, but make it even better for the next few years. He’ll do a whole lot of handing off, but get ready for him to be a fantastic passer, too. Urban Meyer is pretty good at this whole college quarterback development thing.

    18. Clayton Thorson, Sr. Northwestern

Put him higher if his knee really is okay. From most indications, he’s hoping to start the season despite tearing his ACL in the bowl win over Kentucky, but he’s not going to push it and screw up his big-time future. With his NFL upside, he can’t suffer a setback. If he’s fine, and if he can cut down on his picks, he’ll throw for well over 3,000 yards.

    17. Trevor Lawrence, Fr. Clemson

This is either ridiculously too high or 20/20 hindsight too low depending on 1) whether or not he actually wins the job away from Kelly Bryant and 2) he really is every bit as good as he looked all offseason and the spring game. The undeniable talent is there for the superstar recruit to eventually be a No. 1 overall draft pick – and a national championship starter.

    16. Josh Jackson, Soph. Virginia Tech

One of the biggest new ACC stars on the scene last season, he threw for close to 3,000 yards and 20 touchdowns and ran for six scores. He’ll have to do even more for a Hokie team in a little bit of a rebuilding mode – and he can.

    15. Shea Patterson, Jr. Michigan

Not quite the sure thing Wolverine fans might be praying for, he has to come up with a full year after getting hurt last season and after playing in a handful of games as a freshman. Even so, the passing skills are there to finally settle the position and get the O going again.

    14. Ryan Finley, Sr. NC State

He put off the NFL for a year after hitting 65% of his throws for 3,514 yards and 17 scores – watch out for him to be the top quarterback on the board by some services. There’s not much mobility, but the arm is there to revolve the entire offense around him bombing away. He might be losing a slew of key weapons, but he’s the veteran, heady leader who can carry the team.

    13. Brian Lewerke, Jr. Michigan State

Not a national big thing quite yet, the 6-3, 212-pounder can run a bit, and in his first full-time year at the helm, threw for close to 2,800 yards and 20 scores. And now he knows what he’s doing. Michigan State will be about defense and running the ball, but he’ll take over games from time to time, too.

    12. Jalen Hurts, Jr. Alabama

Just …. just …. just watch out for this quarterback race and don’t assume anything quite yet. Hurts is a better passer than you think. He might not take a whole slew of chances, and it’s not always pretty if he has to throw. However, he threw 17 touchdown passes and just one pick, he hits 60% of his throws, and he’s a creative and devastating runner. Now he has to play.

    11. Nick Fitzgerald, Sr. Mississippi State

This is assuming his injured leg is all well and good – he’s expected to be ready to go by the start of the season. If he really is 100%, look out – he’ll be a dominant statistical star in the Joe Moorhead offense. He won’t run as much, but his passing numbers will rise.

    10. Trace McSorley, Sr. Penn State

He loses Saquon Barkley to hand off to and Joe Moorhead as his offensive coordinator, but he’s still coming into the season as the Big Ten’s best quarterback.

Always a wee bit unsung with Barkley getting most of the limelight, McSorley was just as valuable, if not more so – especially late in the Iowa game – hitting 67% of his passes on the year for 3,570 yards and 28 scores. Dangerous on the ground, he ran for 491 yards and 11 touchdowns. Now the offense is all his.

    9. McKenzie Milton, Jr. UCF

Just 5-11 and 185 pounds, he’s not all that big and doesn’t have a huge arm, but get ready for his already Heisman-caliber stats to go through the roof.

He’s not going to be quite as efficient as he was last year, but under new head coach Josh Heupel, expect at least 40 touchdown passes – he threw for 37 – and hit 4,000 yards again with ease.

Taking off for 637 yards and eight touchdowns, he’ll still run, but probably not quite as much. That’s okay – the passing numbers will make up for it.

    8. Justin Herbert, Jr. Oregon

Okay, okay, okay … he might be the No. 1 overall pick in next year’s draft and should technically be higher based on talent and upside. 6-6 bombers with his mobility and skills are rare, but first he has to put together a full season after seeing time in just eight games in each of the first two years.

Accurate, efficient, and a next-level decision and difference maker – Oregon all but went in the tank when he was out in the middle of last year – Herbert has to get used to the intense NFL scouting scrutiny that’s already here. If he can stay in one piece for the entire year, Oregon is going to push hard for the Pac-12 title.

    7. Tua Tagovailoa, Soph. Alabama

Don’t be 100%, bet-the-kids-bet-the-house certain that it won’t be Jalen Hurts under center for the opener against Louisville. However, Tagovailoa will be a major factor in a rotation if that’s true.

Of course, the more likely scenario is that the national championship hero is the starter from Day One and he doesn’t let go of the gig. Tagovailoa isn’t the runner that Hurts is, but the passing skills are at a whole other level. This is the dynamic all-around quarterback missing from the Nick Saban era, and the fan base is ready for him.

    6. Jarrett Stidham, Sr. Auburn

He doesn’t have quite the NFL buzz of Drew Lock or Justin Herbert, but with his size and arm, that could change in a big hurry.

A wee bit underappreciated, he was brilliant in the wins over Alabama and Georgia, but bad games against Clemson – hardly his fault – LSU, and in the second go-round with the Bulldogs took away a bit of the luster.

He hit the 200-yard mark in ten of his last 12 games, and even threw for 331 yards in the loss to UCF. As long as he’s connecting on 67% of his passes again and pushing the ball down the field, the Tiger offense will be devastating.

    5. Jake Browning, Sr. Washington

Forget about him coming anywhere near the 43-touchdowns pass total of 2016, but going into his fourth year as the starter, he’s going to hover around the 70% accuracy mark, and on this team, that’s enough. He’ll hit the deep throws, and he’ll be the veteran leader for a team good enough to win a second Pac-12 title in the last three seasons.

Dangerous as a runner around the goal line, he’ll come up with his share of scores. But it’ll be his efficiency and accuracy that make him the right fit for the loaded Huskies.

    4. Jake Fromm, Soph. Georgia

One important caveat here – this could change in a huge hurry over the next few weeks.

Justin Fields might just be too good to not be the Georgia starting quarterback.

But Fromm might just be too good to keep that from happening for a few years.

The coolest guy in the room in the dogfight of a CFP National Championship, he only hit half of his passes, but he was the difference maker for a while in key moments against the dominant Bama D.

The overall stats might not be there with the way Georgia did and will run the ball, but give him time, and he’s deadly accurate with a fearless attitude when it comes to making the big throw.

The guy is just a true sophomore. He’s going to get better … if he holds off Fields.

    3. Drew Lock, Sr. Missouri

The 6-4, 225-pounder isn’t going to put up 44 touchdown passes and close to 4,000 yards again this year, but that’s okay – the offense is going to be a bit more controlled under new coordinator Derek Dooley.

He has to prove he can be a consistent 65% passer – he’s hitting just 55% for his career – and he has to have a few big wins on the big stages, but when it comes to the NFL skill set, it’s there.

    2. Will Grier, Sr. West Virginia

And here’s your next great Big 12 quarterback who’ll be a must-see each and every week.

As long as Grier can stay healthy, the passing game numbers are going to be ridiculous with David Sills, Gary Jennings and the amazing Mountaineer receiving corps returning. Last year, he threw for almost 3,500 yards and 34 touchdowns despite missing the last few games.

He’s accurate, experienced, fearless, and talented enough to throw for at least 4,000 yards and 40 scores. More importantly, he’s going to be good enough to potentially take West Virginia to the Big 12 Championship game.

    1. Khalil Tate, Jr. Arizona

As long as the interceptions come down – he threw nine – and the rest of the passing game really does take that next step, it’s uh-oh time for the Pac-12.

There was a moment last season when Tate was on such a breathlessly amazing pace as a runner, he seemed ready to steal the Heisman away from Baker Mayfield. But the production stalled over the last few games, the losses started to come, and the string of 100-yard rushing games ended at six. Even so, he finished with 1,411 yards and 12 touchdowns, averaging over nine yards per carry.

He showed in the bowl loss to Purdue that he could throw, too, with a 302-yard, five touchdown day, and that’s the scary part.

The running is obviously there, and he can push the ball down the field when needed. So if he can just be consistent and hold up despite having all 11 defenders keying on him at all times, he should be Kevin Sumlin’s next superstar college playmaker.

And he should be the signature quarterback star of the 2018 season.

    He’s on a special list.
Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn't go so far as to call a dog filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a dog's got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Honestly surprised Fromm is that high. I think athlon and Lundy’s magazines or whatever didn’t have him higher than about 8th I believe.

He’s definitely #1 on the most sackable and worst flop.
Oh and #1 on not being able to back shit-talk up.

Well. What do you know, here's another QB ranking report with Little Jakey well ahead of KB and Trevestite Lawrence is missing.
But then again, it looks like they only ranked QBs that have actually played college football

It’s odd the QB’s are out of the top ten , but the team as a whole is rank in top 5 . It’s got to be tiger talk spoon feeding y’all horse shit. Good luck to the tigers with the weakest schedule and weakest conference.

They are quite content to play the guaranteed 10 win ACC schedules, right up until they couldn't get the ball across the goal line the entire game
    against Alabama. #exposed

Jake got the sportsmanship award in the SEC last year.

The SEC is the premiere conference at faking injuries. They just didn't have room on the trophy for "best dives and most dilusional shit talker award to someone who should still be in highschool" so they wrote "sportsmanship".

Wonder where he will be ranked since he just broke his hand? Lucky it was his left hand.
